Square holes? No problem. Delta's industrial mortiser offers precision with a 1/2-horsepower motor behind it. A rack-and-pinion system raises and lowers the head, and the mortising head column swings 180 degrees for off-table work. Clearly a step up from Delta's MM300 Shopmaster mortising machine, this one's made with the professional user in mind and includes an adjustable dovetail way on the mortising head, a tool and chisel tray, a gas-filled head stabilizer and multiposition feed lever. There's also a generous 16-3/4-by-13-1/2-inch cast-iron base and 2-15/16-inch tall two-piece fence totaling 13-5/8 inches in length. Bit and chisel changing is easy with the chuck key/hex wrench. Of course, we always want to use new tools right out of the box, and Delta's made sure you can get started right away with 1/4-, 5/16-, 3/8-, and 1/2-inch chisel and bit sets. Like everyone else here I was very wary of ordering this machine from amazon due to the seemingly persistent issues with shipping. However, with the price of the machine (at the time I ordered it was $200), a $25 gift certificate, and free shipping, I decided to role the dice. I guess I was one of the lucky ones. My box was MANGLED, but thankfully the Styrofoam packing held up better than the box and all the pieces were accounted for. That being said, I wish people would start reviewing the tool and not Amazon or UPS. Most of the bad reviews on this machine were caused by the "gentle hands of Brown". Amazon and UPS have their own sites where you can gripe about their service. Let's leave this forum for the merits of the Tool. The two most popular machines seem to be the Jet and the Delta, so I decided to do a little comparison. What I like about the Delta: - It's a Delta. I tend to favor them since all the machines I own that are Delta have never given me any problems and their customer service is pretty good (at least in my experience). - The 1/2-horse induction motor is powerful, but surprisingly QUIET. It was a joy to use simply because I didn't need hearing protection. - The table is SOLID CAST IRON. The Jet table is MDF. In fact I believe this is the only bench-top model with a cast iron table. It's also 16" by 14". This is a HUGE table by comparison. -The fence is SOLID CAST IRON and 3" tall giving MUCH more support to the work piece. The Jet is like an inch and half. - The rack and pinion that moves it up and down is like an inch and a half wide. The rack on the jet is maybe a half-inch. The wider rack gives it smoother motion. Not only that, the rack is machined out of the post which is...guess what!...solid cast iron. The jet has a round steel post (I think it's steel, could be wrong). - The hold down over the fence is...guess what!...solid cast iron. - The steel chuck-access door swings wide open giving you access to the chuck from almost any angle. - Comes with a free post height extension upgrade, which gives you another 2" of clearance over the work piece. This is an extra $19 upgrade on the Jet. - Comes with 4 chisels. The Jet only comes with 3. - The delta weighs 55 pds. The Jet only weighs 44. I'm old school where weight = quality. What I don't like: - With so much to like on this well-designed and well thought-out machine, it's hard to find things not to like. - The height adjustment block disables the rack and pinion adjustment of the fence. The fence is still adjustable, you just need to move it by hand. - The handle is not ergonomic. Some of the newer models come with a handle that is parallel to the floor, which is much more forgiving on your wrist. - The chisels...it does come with 4, however, quality is only average. They ARE good chisels and allow you to start working immediately, but you may want to invest in a quality set of chisels for fine work, like Fisch (I wish Freud made mortising chisels...) - The price. I'm disappointed that Amazon jacked the price up on this. As of 8/2004 it was as low as $200. Now it's back up to a ridiculous $250. Check out Woodworker's Supply (woodworker.com). But this is an amazon issue, not a Delta issue. All-in-all, the Delta is simply the best bench-top model for the price. And considering that for a while it was cheaper than the Jet I can't understand why people weren't buying it. I hope all the shipping stories didn't scare people away. That's a problem with Amazon and UPS, not the tool. I've used it for a month now and am extremely satisfied. If you're concerned about shipping, get it from a local dealer, but just get it - it's worth it.
