If your workshop does not have one of these combination sanders, it's probably because you don't think you need it. But put it to work once and you'll realize you can't get along without it. Its uses are endless. You know those tight curves and angles you have to sand by hand? Not anymore, thanks to this Shopmaster sander. The automatic belt-tensioning and tracking controls are conveniently located and easy to use, and the built-in power takeoff for a flexible shaft accessory (sold separately) is a great extra touch that allows you to accomplish any number of additional tasks. Finishing curves or odd-shaped work is a cinch when you remove the belt platen, and you'll even be sanding chamfers and bevels just by tilting the sturdy aluminum tables on either sander. The disc is a fabulous 8 inches, which opens up all kinds of uses. The side panel removes in a blink to change belts. The 1-inch belt sands 3,000 surface feet per minute, and the disc travels at 1,725 rpm for aggressive stock removal, all powered by a 1/3-horsepower induction motor. I've been making a lot of knives lately and have found this sander invaluable for that application. The narrow belt has more utility than wider ones for doing handle work and the disk is great for shaping. It's got plenty of power for both wood and metal, is relatively quiet, and has performed flawlessly for almost two years of pretty heavy use. So, why am I not rating this 5 stars then you might ask? Well, there are a few drawbacks. First off, the dust extraction isn't all that great. Every second or third time I change the belt I need to vacuum out the dust channel underneath the cover. The disks don't last all that long and are a pain in the neck to scrape loose and replace. I finally decided to leave off the inner guard below the disk sander which, best as I can tell, is only there to help channel dust. Since it doesn't work all that well anyway and takes three screws to remove and replace each time I've just left it off. The sander still works fine and it's one less step to replace the disk. I've also had a really hard time finding 8" disks in anything other than 80 grit, though the belts are available in a variety of grits. Good value; solid product. If it ever gives up the ghost I'd replace it with another one in a heartbeat. Not perfect but very useful and certainly recommended.
